3 Old Fashioned Cake Recipes
Here are three old recipes from 1910. They include molasses cake, molasses fruit cake, and hickory nut cake.
Molasses Cake
1 cup molasses
2 tablespoons shortening, melted
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon soda
3 cups flour
1 tablespoon ginger
Dissolve the soda in a tablespoon of boiling water. Add it to the molasses. Then add the melted shortening, boiling water, ginger, and flour. Beat until smooth. Pour into greased cake pan.
Bake at 325 to 350 degrees for 30 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.
Molasses Fruit Cake
1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup shortening
2 cups cooking molasses
1 cup milk
4 eggs
1 tablespoon ginger
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
5 cups sifted flour
1 cup raisins
1 cup currants
Work the shortening well together. Add the molasses, the eggs – well beaten, milk, salt, and spices. Gradually sift in flour. Dissolve soda in 1 tablespoon water, add to the mixture. Flour the raisins and currants and add last. Bake at 325 to 350 degrees for one hour, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.
Hickory Nut Cake
1/2 cup shortening
2 cups flour
4 egg whites
1 1/2 cups sugar
3/4 cup water
1 cup hickory nut kernals
1 teaspoon baking powder
Beat the shortening and sugar to a cream, then add the water and flour. Stir until smooth. Add half the well-beaten egg whites, then the nuts, then the remainder of the whites and the baking powder. Pour into greased cake pan. Bake at 325 to 350 degrees for 45 minutes, or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.
